It's Time to Reflect on Purgatory

Purgatory by Carracci

Purgatory by Carracci

Although not one of the Four Last Things, purgatory fits in with the last things because for most good people, it will be experienced somewhere between judgment and heaven.  The existence of purgatory is taught by the Church because it has some Biblical basisand it is a logical way of upholding the belief that God is both merciful and just.

There can be no evil or attachment to sin in heaven.  Consequently, that would leave most humans in hell if not for the place of cleansing.  Purgatory is a place that purifies a soul in preparation for communion with God in heaven.  For people who die in a state of sin (not mortal), purgatory is a place of hope because however long or painful the cleansing is, it is only temporary and the joy of heaven waits beyond.

Purgatory: Where (place) a soul is purified (punished) for unforgiven sins which are forgiven. (Penance) - for a certain period. (otherworldly time). The above understanding of this Purification Process known traditionally as Purgatory creates many difficulties with church doctrine. One being "ex nihilio creatio" God created the world from nothing. Q. If there was "nothing" before the creation of the world (quantatatively measurable time , matter, life etc..) then, this begs the question of what "on earth" is nothing? On earth - we know nothing to not have measurable time.(no time) In the supra-natural world , (if purgatory exists in this realm,) then there must be a type of supra-natural time. Supra-natural time is existentially real , therefore there was "something" not nothing - before God created our temporal world. God live in "eternity" Souls live in "aeviternity" a metaphysical neologism which implies the medieval schoolmen believed in a period of "time". Which again is a contradistinction and problematic with the doctine of "ex nihilio creatio" A perplexed Catholic - Dan Falcone
