A Bit of CPSIA Sanity

Three years ago the government passed one of the most intrusive “safety” laws in recent memory. It basically put anyone who sold anything for children at risk of huge fines and jail time if any of their products, whether new or used, turned out to have lead in them. Among the idiotic things covered by this law were children’s books, motorcycles, atvs and clothes.

The children’s motorbike industry has basically shut down in America because of the law and libraries were under the specter of lawsuits if any of their children’s books happened to have lead in the paint. The home-made clothing industry for children has also been devestated because of the onerous testing requirements that favor mass production and huge corporations.

A bit of sanity has been added to the law, exempting books, atvs and motorcycles from the testing requirements. It’s only three years too late but at least it’s something.

Don’t get too comfortable, your garage sale is still covered by the law. I’m not kidding.
