Hint: It isn't the candy.
In Jewish and Catholic tradition feast days start on the evening before the day on the calendar. That's why vespers for feasts are on the evening before and why Saturday evening Mass counts for Sunday. The name "Halloween" is a shortening of "All Hallows Eve," the beginning of the celebration of the Feast of All Saints.
About this beautiful painting:
The original 'A Soul Brought to Heaven' was painted by Bouguereau in 1878. Between 1875 and 1877, Bouguereau mourned the loss of his sixteen year old son Georges, his wife Nelly, and eight month old son William-Maurice. Thus, 'A Soul Brought to Heaven' was not conceived as a tribute to a specific family member, but it was painted while the artist was still in mourning.
