If you haven’t heard about this fun new bit of federal government overreaching into your business, now is the time to do some research. Mark Riffey over at Business is Personal has been posting about CPSIA for a while.
Basically, the new law requires that you have proof from your vendors that anything you carry for children 12 and under meets lead and other safety requirements. No big deal you may think.
According to the law, each lot of products must be certified. What do you think that is going to do to the price of your kids items? Now imagine what this is going to do to your bookkeeping. You have to keep a certificate on record for each lot that you receive proving that that particular lot is “safe.”
What if you assemble parts to make a product? Like clothes? Even if all of your cloth and button suppliers certify that their parts are lead-free you are still required to pay for testing on each product line to prove that lead wasn’t spontaneously generated when you sewed your clothes.
Even better, if your supplier can’t prove that the products you currently have in inventory for kids meet the new safety requirements, you can’t sell them after February 10th. How about that hit on your bottom line?
