    This is Holy Week!

“Holy Week - on Our Journey Toward Easter”
“The First Word Our Lord is recorded as speaking in the Scriptures is at the age of twelve: ‘I must be about my Father’s business’ (Gospel of Luke 2:40). During his public life, he reaffirmed his obedience to his Father: ‘I do always the things that please him’ (Gospel of John 8:29). Now on the cross, when he goes out to meet death, and freely surrenders his life, his last words are: ‘Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit’ (Gospel of Luke 23:46). The last words of other men are spoken in whisper, but he spoke these words in a loud voice.

Death, therefore, did not come to him; he went to death. No one took his life away; he laid it down of himself. He was strong enough to live, but he died as an act of will. This was not an emphasis on dying, but an affirmation of uninterrupted Divine Life. It was the beginning of his return to the glory which He had with the Father before the foundations of the world were laid.”

    - words of Archbishop Fulton Sheen from the book “Seven Words of Jesus and Mary.”

“When Our Blessed Mother saw her son bow his head and delivery up his spirit, she remembered that last word that she is ever recorded to have spoken in the Scriptures. It was to the wine steward at the marriage feast of Cana: ‘Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.’ (Gospel of John 2:5). What a beautiful valedictory! They are the most magnificent words that ever came from the lips of a woman: ‘Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.’ At the Holy Transfiguration the Heavenly Father spoke from the Heavens and said: ‘This is my beloved Son … Hear ye him’ (Gospel of Matthew 17:5). Now our Blessed Mother speaks and says, “Do his will.”- words of Archbishop Fulton Sheen

During the Church year, the Church dedicates, in a very special way, each month of the calendar. The month of May is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, Mary, the Mother of God. The Blessed Mother stands always before us, as a true and loving mother, pointing the way to her son, Our Lord and Savior.

Mary is our Mother in the order of grace

“By her complete adherence to the Father’s will, to his Son’s redemptive work, and to every prompting of the Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary is the Church’s model of faith and charity. Thus she is a ‘preeminent and … wholly unique member of the Church’; indeed, she is the ‘exemplary realization (typus) of the Church.’

Her role in relation to the Church and to all humanity goes still further. ‘In a wholly singular way she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope, and burning charity in the Savior’s work of restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the order of grace.

This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation … Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress and Mediatrix.”

    - from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 967-969
