Just want to say that Anne Porter’s “Living things: Collected Poems’ (Zoland, 2006) seems to be back in stores after having been unavailable for a while. Porter has been called the “greatest living Catholic poet” in the U.S. And while there are a number of fine Catholic poets, she is certainly one of the best.
“Living Things” is rich material for Lenten devotions for lay people and inspiration for homilies for priests. The pems collected in this book include “In Holy Week,” “St. Matthew’s Weeds,” “St. John’s Day,” “Consider the Lilies of the Sea,’ and “After Psalm 137.” One of the most unusual poems in this book is “A Short Prayer,” about Mary, which seems to be a personal interpretation of the “Hail Mary.” Some of the poems appeared on Commonweal.
I’m planning to review this book during Lent on my book review blog, One-Minute Book Reviews, but because it is so rich in material for Lenten devotions or study groups, I wanted to recommend it before then to anyone who may still be looking for ideas for these. Porter has been a finalist for the National Book Award and was the subject of a long, admiring profile in The Wall Street Journal Last Year.
